Leane's Battalion 48th Battalion A.I.F. 1916-1919

The History of the 48th Battalion A.I.F., from its formation in Egypt in early 1916 from the veterans of the 16th Battalion, to its eventual disbandment in 1919. The 48th Battalion fought in many of the battles on the Western Front as part of the 12th Infantry Brigade, including Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Guedecourt, Bullecourt, Messines, Third Battle of Ypres, Dernancourt, Monument Wood, Amiens and the Hindenburg Outpost Line.

The reference to Leane in the title comes from the fact that Ray Leane was the CO of the 48th Battalion. His Brother Ben, three nephews and other relatives served under him in the 48th Battalion , which led to its being known throughtout the AIF as the ' Joan Of Arc Battalion'- Made of All Leanes. Tragedy struck the clan at the 1st Battle of Bullecourt April 1917 when Ray’s brother Ben was killed in action. Another two of Ray’s Brothers died during the war but they were not serving with the 48th Battalion. All 5 sons of Thomas and Alice Leane served during WW1, 3 paying the maximum sacrifice.  Tragedy struck the clan at the 1st Battle of Bullecourt when Ray’s brother Ben was killed in action. Another two of Ray’s Brothers died during the war but they were not serving with the 48th Battalion. All 5 sons of Thomas and Alice Leane served during WW1, 3 paying the maximum sacrifice. The author, Neville Browning, writes  an extremely comprehensive military history. The books are made to a high standard with fine quality internal paper which does not age tone.

This history includes nominal rolls, Honour Roll Awards and Citations, Nominal Index and detailed list of POW and their fate.

Throughout this history are a total of 285 printed photographs most never before published with scarce member details.
