The author Rupert Goodman served in the AIF from 1940-6 with the 2/4th AGH. He took part in the Seige of Tobruk. This book is an overall historical military account of the VAD throughout WW1 and WW2. However, the bulk of the book is devoted to World War Two when VAD nurses were employed throughout the Australian Army General Hospitals. The book has excellent personal story coverage of the detachment work during WW2. The detailed narrative is supported by numerous named group photos a Nominal Roll completes the book.
