The unmistakable sound of its main rotor blade was almost as distinct as its shape. Long before the Vietnam conflict had ended, the “Huey” was probably the most recognisable helicopter in the world because of its appearances on nightly news reports.
More than 5,000 Hueys operated in Vietnam; around 2,500 were lost to enemy fire.
It was also the workhorse icon of the Vietnam War, it was a favourite among pilots who valued its adaptability and ruggedness.
