Since her commissioning into the RAN in 1955, HMAS Melbourne has had an extraordinary career. The flagship of the fleet for more than 20 years during which time she lost an arsenal of aircraft and has been in involved in countless mishaps.

In 1964, she collided with the Australian destroyer , Voyager with loss of 82 lives. Five years later, she cut a USN destroyer in half with the loss of 74 men. Amazingly, half of the USS Frank E Evans continued float after the accident.

In both cases the Melbourne was cleared of all blame. This is a full history of this remarkable ship and somewhat the life and times in the RAN during this period.
