Even before the war ended, Charles Bean had taken on the massive task of writing Australia's Official History of World War One. Bean entrusted the compiling of the Medical History of the AIF to Arthur G. Butler DSO ED (25 May 1872 – 27 February 1949) who as a Doctor and had been a member of the AIF Medical Services throughout the war. Interestingly, Butler from Queensland had landed at Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion in the first boat ashore and then performed heroic feats on that first Anzac Day. The experiences of the Australian Medical Service in the Gallipoli, the Light Horse in Palestine and ANMEF 1914 New Guinea theatres of war are recorded in this Volume I.
