Mervyn William Earle CARTER initially joined the 16th Battalion and landed on Gallipoli on the 2 October 1915. He served as a sniper until the 3 December 1915 when he was shot by a turkish sniper. After sometime in hospital and after the evacuation, he was transferred to the 48th Battalion. He fought with the Battalion until 6 August 1916 when he succumbed to shell shock during fighting at Pozieres. After another hospital stay, he went back to the front lines doing signaller duties - repairing broken telephone lines on the battlefield. On one such mission, he become hopelessly lost, not being able to ascertain, the location of the 48th Battalion. He was arrested wandering near a French village and charged with desertion. Finally ending up AWOL back in Western Australia - A fascinating story.

His story is shown on copies of the actual story pages that he wrote in December 1918.
