A classic World War II memoir Australian commando in Huon Peninsula New Guinea - Lae Salamaua Wau.

Peter Ryan undertook numerous intelligence patrols in the general region of Markham River, which enters the sea near the then large Japanese base at Lae. Reconnoitering for 5th Independent Company, Kanga force which was made up of members of the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles and a small number of Australian soldiers. At the time he was only 18 years old, he served as an intelligence operative behind enemy lines in New Guinea for eighteen months, much of the time alone. He was awarded the MM, Military Medal for gallantry in the field. He wrote Fear Drive My Feet about his war experiences - he said his wartime service was the best thing that ever happened to him.
He died in 2015.
