Operation Kingfisher Unravelling Sandakan’s Darkest Secret Operation Kingfisher Unravelling Sandakan’s Darkest Secret by acclaimed military historian Lynette Ramsay Silver AM, MBE is the final, groundbreaking volume of a book trilogy dedicated to one of the most harrowing atrocities of the Pacific War: the Sandakan Death Marches. Out of 2,434 Allied prisoners (Australian and British soldiers) held by the Japanese in Borneo, a staggering only six men survived.
For over 80 years, the accepted historical narrative maintained that the military failed to save these men due to a lack of resources and political will. While Silver previously exposed that the original secret rescue plan—Operation Kingfisher—was abandoned due to faulty intelligence, this book blows open a decades-long cover-up by revealing that a second rescue mission was secretly resurrected. Drawing on more than three decades of meticulous research, newly declassified UK records, and firsthand accounts from survivors, local Sabahan heroes, and soldiers. Silver exposes how this second mission tragically failed again. The book details a devastating chain of flawed assumptions, institutional incompetence, poor judgment, and failures of leadership that ultimately cost hundreds of lives that could have been saved. Far more than a chronicle of military strategy, Operation Kingfisher acts as an investigative exposure into the deliberate litany of deceit, fabrications, and denials used by officials to cover their tracks over subsequent decades.
It reconstructs the deeply personal stories of the prisoners—including Douglas Stirling, believed to be Australia's youngest POW—and honours the local people who risked everything to help them, ensuring that the historical truth is finally held accountable.
