Reginald Kirby the author served as a Chaplain / Padre with the RAAF in New Guinea. He was assigned to RAAF 30 Squadron, after his return to Australia in 1943 he wrote this novel. The story presents a vivid portrait of a young Australian airman, Jimmy Creegan a RAAF Beaufighter pilot in New Guinea. The book with the author's first-hand descriptions of jungle warfare and of aerial fighting had wide appeal in the WW2 period. So much so, that the year after (1944), he followed up and published a book titled Pearl Harbor pilot.
