The Battalion was raised in November 1967 and deployed to South Vietnam as part of Australia's commitment to the Vietnam War in November 1968. 9 RAR served a year-long tour of duty based out of Nui Dat conducting operations mainly in Phuoc Tuy Province as part of the 1st Australian Task Force.

An memorable tribute to the men of  9 RAR who served for Australia during the Vietnam War. A large book of 300+ pages has an extraordinary amount of stories and photographs most from private collections.
Each Operation of the Battalion is well documented with accompanying battle maps. In October 1969, a relatively new Lieutenant with the Battalion led his platoon in an assault on enemy bunkers. For his leadership and gallantry he was awarded the Military Cross. That Officer was Peter Gosgrove later to become the 26th Governor-General of Australia - General Sir Peter John Gosgrove AK MC
