This volume commences in May 1918 with the AIF holding the German spring offensive on the Somme. Following through until wars end.
Explanation and the implementation of “peaceful penetration”. Advances were then made in the Morlancourt area in May and June and the magnificent 4th of July Battle for Hamel. Tanks and the Americans being used in high concentration for the first time on the battlefield.
On the 8 August 1918 the Australians and Canadians on the Amiens front made the break which developed into a triumphant general offensive. Much discussion about the everlasting quality of the digger and frontline battalions being undermanned. The A.I.F. infantry was finally withdrawn from action on 5 October 1918 when beyond the Hindenburg Line.
Five weeks later the war ended.
