Allan Stanton served as a driver in a APC M113 of B Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment Royal Australian Armoured Corps.
The book chronicles Stanton's abrupt transition from a peaceful civilian life in Brisbane, where he dreamed of becoming a professional golfer, to being conscripted for National Service in the Australian Army in October 1967. He served as an Armoured Corps trooper, driving a M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) with the 3rd Cavalry Regiment in the Phuoc Tuy Province. Rather than glorifying combat, the book captures the realistic "Digger's" perspective of an incredibly unpopular and politically charged war. Stanton details the intense contrast between the terrifying brutality of the field—such as landmine detonations, rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attacks, and ambush casualties—and the crushing boredom and camaraderie of base camp life at Nui Dat.
A small-scale release book, independent military publication, copies are highly sought after by military historians and collectors
