This is the Battalion history book of the 36th Australian Infantry Battalion again makes available the proud story of this unit. The book is a complete reprint of the 1967 original. They played a part in the Kokoda campaign before being airlifted to Sanananda where they fought in the savage battles of Northern Papua and in the process lost many good men.

As the war progressed they were sent to New Britain and spent many arduous months in that campaign, until the war ended and the occupation of Rabaul followed. The book now contains a post-war epilogue and an index.

The title of the book reflects the esteem held for their Commanding Officer and use of tactics similar to US Marines.

• "Ike": The nickname was a shortened reference to their commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Oscar "Ike" Isaachsen.
• "Marines": The second part of the nickname was a nod to their military tactics, which heavily involved amphibious landings and patrolling in rough, amphibious terrain, much like the U.S. Marine Corps.
